SketchUp and sketchup Pro for Garden Design 3-D modelling

SketchUp is a simple and effective tool to create visualisations of your design. Our workshops and training in the use of SketchUp and SketchUp Pro will enable your Garden Design practice to produce effective plans with ease.

A model produced in SketchUp.

We have used the basic framework of SketchUp successfully for many years. In many ways, the old methods of section/elevation drawings have been superseded with the use of 3-D computer modelling.

We run workshops in the basics of SketchUp for Garden Design modelling. These include the essentials to get you up and running, how to use the 3-D Warehouse, be creative with visualisation and how to create animations to enable a ‘walk-through’ of the garden for your clients.

SketchUp Pro is the professional version of SketchUp, available for a rolling annual subscription. It has proven to be as effective as Adobe Illustrator for laying out final documents as it enables you to turn your model into fully detailed, scaled and labelled plans using the advanced set of tools in the Layout workspace.

Contact us for details of the next workshop, or if you are interested in a more bespoke support in your use of SketchUp.

creative drawing and visualisation

We can offer workshops in creative drawing and visualisation for garden designers.

Creative drawing techniques.

Let us help with the creative investigations in the early stages of a design, right through to hand-drawn elements of a detailed Concept Plan. Your 3D garden design can sell the idea to a client; we have years of experience in the arts as well as garden design in visualising the project. Richard graduated from University with a First Class honours degree in Fine Art and as a qualified teacher has years of experience delivering courses in creative drawing.

Photoshop for Garden Designers

Photoshop is the ‘go-to’ programme to add that final layer of artistry to your designs. We offer workshops and training for Garden Designers in the use of Photoshop.

Starting from a SketchUp model and working it up in Photoshop

The typical ‘workflow’ for designers is to move through the creative stage of a new project on the drawing board, and then to progress to detailed plans produced using CAD software (Vectorworks, SketchUp, etc.).

Invaluable in the final stages of preparing plans is reviewing the artistry of the work – let’s face it, CAD drawings in the raw are somewhat… computerised!

This is where Photoshop comes in. Typically, designers export chosen views of their designs to Photoshop, render the graphics adding shadows, texture, colour etc. Finally, this is sent to either Vectorworks, Layout or Illustrator for paste-up.

A simple SketchUp model…
… becomes a textured image after work in Photoshop.

We can provide workshops in the use of Photoshop for Garden Design, as well as some of the plug-in options to render designs directly from within SketchUp. Contact us to find out dates of any forthcoming workshops, or if you would like us to provide support in your use of advanced rendering tools.

Planting Design Workshops

We offer a range of workshops, talks and lectures on different aspects of Planting Design.

As Head of the Northern School of Garden Design, Richard has years of experience in lecturing, and has developed numerous resources through workshop development.

Subjects range from beginners planting, naturalistic (grassy) plantings, the formal garden, shady/woodland sites, etc.

Richard has worked with Stephen and Kim Rogers at Dove Cottage Nursery.

Talks, courses and workshops can be arranged for gardening and horticultural societies. Contact us to find out the date of the next workshop, or if you would like Richard to deliver a workshop for you.
